I was quite happy getting my job in IT. Yeah it was IT for a construction firm, Ladderstone Group but it was a job nonetheless. It was incredibly difficult to get even a stupid job like this but I had to start somewhere.
The first day was incredibly tiring, moving stuff around. The office radio was playing, but the boss said, very strangely, I wasn’t allowed to touch it. He obviously loved his music a lot. The previous employee had made a right mess of it. I was a bit of a neat freak so my first morning involved sorting out all of the cables that had been dumped into the big box. It didn’t look like I was actually doing much but I know I’d be asked later for cables and then I’d know where the right one would be.
By lunchtime I was bopping away to the radio. I had got onto cleaning the computers, as they were really horrid. The joys of having construction workers needing to type up reports and print things. Thankfully there were only a couple machines to do.
By accident when I was using the keyboard cleaner I managed to kick my boss’s machine back up from it’s sleep and what a surprise it had no password. What was surprising was the sound now coming from the machine. So nice and relaxing.
I felt really sleepy so I lay back into the chair, staring at the screen. I noticed images of something on the screen. I couldn’t remember them but everything felt nice.
The boss came in when I felt real nice. He seemed pleased with me and slowly took off my fancy shoes and then my fancy trousers. Then he pulled up a pair of trackies he was carrying and then put on a pair of rigger boots. Then he pulled off the shirt I was wearing and put on a nicer looser one. Then at last a hi-viz jacket.
“Lad, I think it’s time for you to start your apprenticeship with the others”
I got up feeling the most refreshed I ever had, and got to work straight away laying brick after brick for the houses or summert we were building. I was just happy to have my apprenticeship and the boss was even thinking of taking me on.
